Contact Enrichment API vs Job Change Data: Why a Live Signal Beats a Static Snapshot

If you are shopping for a contact enrichment API or a people data API, you are usually solving one of two problems. Either your CRM records are missing fields, or the fields you have are wrong. Enrichment fixes both by matching a contact to a data provider and filling in the title, company, email, and firmographics.

That is useful. But it is worth being precise about what enrichment does and does not give you, because the most valuable thing that happens to a B2B contact is not a missing field. It is a move. And a move is a signal, not a snapshot.

What a contact enrichment API gives you

A contact enrichment API answers a question at a point in time: who is this person right now? You send an email or a name and domain, and you get back a completed record. Run it on import, run it on a schedule, and your database stays more complete than it would otherwise.

The limitation is built into the model. Enrichment is a pull: you ask, it answers. It does not tell you when something changed, only that the current value differs from the last time you asked. If you only re-enrich a record quarterly, a contact who changed jobs in month one sits wrong in your CRM for up to 90 days before your next pass catches it. The email bounces in the meantime, and the relationship you spent a year building is filed under a company you no longer sell into.

What a job change data feed gives you

A job change data API is a push built around the event, not the field. Instead of asking “is this record still correct?” it watches the people you care about and tells your stack the moment one of them moves:

  • Who moved, matched back to your CRM record
  • From where and to where, old company and title to new company and title
  • When, including an intent-to-move signal in the cases where the move is not yet public
  • Where to route it, the rep or CS owner who held the original relationship

You consume it as a webhook the instant a change is detected, or poll a feed on whatever cadence fits your architecture. The output is not a cleaner list. It is a stream of warm leads, because every move is a person who already knows your product landing somewhere new with budget and a mandate to show results.

This matters because the people most likely to buy from you are rarely the ones filling out a form. Only about 6% of customers tell a vendor they changed jobs; the other 94% just move on quietly. Enrichment run on a schedule will eventually notice the new company. A job change feed tells you in time to act on it.

The signal is the point

Set the two side by side and the difference is intent, not accuracy:

AnswersWho is this person now?Who just moved, and when?
FreshnessAs fresh as your last runSame day the move is detected
OutputA completed fieldA routed warm lead

The reason to care about the timing is that the move is the single highest-converting buying signal you can wire into your stack:

  • Champion-sourced deals close with a 2.7x higher probability, in roughly half the sales cycle.
  • You have a 60 to 70% chance of selling to an existing relationship, versus 5 to 20% for a cold prospect.
  • 65% of a company’s business comes from existing customers and their networks, and it is 6x more costly to acquire a new customer than to retain an existing relationship.

Enrichment keeps that history readable. The signal is what turns it into pipeline. For a fuller treatment of how job changes compare to intent data and other triggers, see our signal-based selling playbook.

What the feed is worth on real numbers

Take a CRM with 10,000 contacts. When you first turn detection on, roughly 20% surface as hot leads immediately, about 2,000 conversations available on day one. After that, expect 200 to 300 new warm leads every month, because 2 to 3% of B2B contacts change jobs monthly and they never stop moving.

An enrichment API run against that same database would quietly correct those 200 to 300 records over time. The difference is that you would learn about the change as a data-quality fix, after the fact, instead of as a warm introduction, in time to reach the champion inside their first 90 days.

Build, buy, or feed

You can assemble a job change feed yourself on top of a raw people-data source, and some teams do. The endpoint is rarely the hard part. The hard parts are:

  • Match rate. Re-identifying a contact who changed their email, company, and sometimes their name is where most home-built pipelines leak.
  • Freshness and intent. Catching the move fast, ideally reading intent-to-move signals before the change is public, so you arrive early rather than after the seat is filled.
  • Coverage beyond Salesforce. Many tools are Salesforce-first. If your team runs on HubSpot, Pipedrive, or Zoho, breadth matters more than one deep integration.

Compare providers in the job change tracking landscape on those three axes, not on the raw endpoint. Champions runs the whole loop for you across Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive, Zoho and others, with no app to install and no logins for reps. Because the leads convert, the signal is backed by a contractual ROI guarantee: if champion-sourced revenue does not reach 2x your annual service fee, you are covered under our terms. Among the compared tools, only Champions offers that.

A note for developers scoping this: there is no public API reference page yet, so the fastest way to see payload shape and match rate against your own data is a live walkthrough.

Where to start

If you already run a contact enrichment API, keep it. It does the job of keeping records complete. But do not mistake a completed field for a signal. The move is the moment worth building around, and you want it as a push, the same day, routed to the person who owns the relationship.

Book a demo and we will run detection against your own CRM live, show you the moves already hiding in it, and walk through how the feed and webhooks fit your stack. Prefer email? Reach us at [email protected] and we will get you the details.

Enrichment tells you who your contacts are. A job change feed tells you the day they become your best next opportunity.
